An ER24 medic was allegedly assaulted on Monday while transporting a patient from an accident scene on Paul Street in Potchefstroom.
A Spokesperson Russel Meiring says on arrival at the scene they found a bakkie smashed through the kitchen area of the residence with a man, believed to be in his twenties, trapped inside the vehicle.
He says the patient was stabilised and once freed from the vehicle he was transported to a nearby hospital for further care.
It is alleged that while on route to the hospital the patient's father, who was seated in front of the ambulance punched the ER medic in the face and attempted to grab the steering wheel.
Meiring says the medic made use of his situational training and was able to defend himself.
The medic, who managed to pull over the vehicle, removed himself from the situation.
It is alleged that the father then climbed into a bakkie, that had been following the ambulance at the time.
Meiring says they continued caring for the patient and transported him to a private hospital.
Upon arrival, the medic was assessed by a doctor before the case was reported at the Potchefstroom police.
