North West police are investigating after four members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) were found dead in a dormant mining shaft in Orkney on Saturday morning. The members, who had been deployed on a 24-hour shift at the mining shaft, were on duty as part of Operation Vala Umgodi – an operation that deals with illegal mining activities.

Western Cape police have discovered drugs worth more than R3-million and a sizeable amount of weapons at the weekend. Spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut said a 28-year-old man, who’s expected to appear in court on Monday, was arrested after he led police to the apartment in Goodwood where the drugs and weapons were found.

Five people were killed and two sustained severe injuries after a single vehicle lost control and overturned on the R63 in Bedford towards Adelaide. Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the accident took place on Saturday night at around 22:20.

A woman who was allegedly sexually violated with a spoon has approached Afriforum's Private Prosecution Unit (PPU) to take on her case. Felicia Mkondo, who consented to be identified, approached the unit, stating that the prosecutor assigned to the case was ill treating her, exposing her to secondary trauma and that evidence had gone missing from the docket.

Outgoing environment minister Barbara Creecy’s decision on conserving African Penguins’ food source will be contested in the Gauteng High Court from 22 to 24 October. BirdLife SA says in an affidavit the Minister ignored the recommendations of a panel of experts she had appointed on African Penguin conservation.

A 32-year-old man appeared in the East London Magistrates Court on Thursday, on charges of perjury against Premier Oscar Mabuyane and Chief Justice Raymond Zondo. Phadima Fukulu is said to have falsely opened cases of corruption in Johannesburg and East London, against both Mabuyane and Zondo, and then fled from the Hawks after allegedly giving conflicting evidence.

The State has withdrawn all the charges against television presenter and rapper Molemo 'Jub Jub' Maarohanye. Maarohanye was facing three counts of rape, two of attempted murder and one of assault.

A teenager is in police custody after video footage emerged of him assaulting his grandmother. Police Spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut says police only learned about the video footage on Wednesday and registered a case docket for further investigation.
