Correctional Services Minister, Sibusiso Ndebele, will host a colloquium on Monday to come up with solutions on overcrowding in prisons.
Department spokesperson, Logan Maistry, says among the other issues to be addressed will be alternative sentencing as well as the draft White Paper on Remand Detention Management in South Africa.
He says South Africa's rate of imprisonment ranks amongst the top ten in the world and overcrowding is one of the most pressing issues facing the Department.
Maistry says a large proportion of the country's inmate population comprises awaiting trial or remand detainees.
