Oscar Pistorius sentence appeal to be heard in Supreme Court of Appeal

November 3 (ANA) – The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein will on Friday, hear the State’s appeal against the six-year murder sentence handed to Paralympic gold medallist Oscar Pistorius.

The State will argue that six years in jail is too lenient a sentence for the 2013 murder of his law graduate girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

On September 18, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku confirmed the date for the hearing.

Pistorius was sent to jail for a second time in June 2016 to start serving his six-year jail term for the Valentines Day 2013 killing of Steenkamp.

He had initially been found guilty of culpable homicide and received a five-year prison sentence but on appeal by the State was found guilty of murder.

The case was transferred back to the original trial judge, Judge Thokozile Masipa who then sentenced Pistorius to six years.

The State, however, indicated that they would appeal what they called a shockingly lenient sentence.
