Kwazulu Natal police shot and killed a man suspected to have been behind the killing of 10 family members in Pietermaritzburg on Friday morning.
National Police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said another suspect was wounded and two others arrested in police operations following the early morning shooting.
Seven women and three men were killed several gunmen opened fire on the family in Imbali.
Police Minister Bheki Cele and senior officials descended on the area on Friday.
Speaking to the media, Minister Cele said when officers arrived on the scene they received information about possible suspects at a house a few kilometres away busy with a so-called cleansing ceremony."
"As police approached that particular area they encountered the exchange of fire. Indeed, those people were found to be doing cleansing there," he said.
Cele also said the suspect who was shot and killed was wanted by the police for some time.
The motive for the family killing is not yet known, but Minister Cele said "high-ranking detectives" are investigating the case.
