The Freedom Front Plus in the Free State has welcomed the arrest of a 38-year old suspect, following the attack on an elderly couple on a farm in the Vrede area.
The party's provincial leader, Jan van Niekerk, says swift action by the police led to the arrest in Vrede last night.
He says this was only a few hours after Johannes Kritzinger en his wife Rita, both in their 70's, were shot on their farm by two men.
Netcare 911's Chris Botha says paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the couple both sustained critical gunshot wounds.
He says a medical helicopter was activated and arrived at the farm where paramedics stabilised the wounded, and airlifted the man to a specialised hospital in Gauteng.
Botha says his wife was transported by ambulance to the same hospital in Alberton.
The second suspect is still at large.
