One of the two sentenced prisoners who escaped from the Makhanda Prison over the weekend has been rearrested.
The Department of Correctional Services said 37-year-old Zuko Sabatha was arrested in Joza Location in Makhanda on Sunday.
Department spokesperson, Nobuntu Gantana, said the rearrest was made by members of their Departmental Emergency Support Team in partnership with the police.
She said Sabatha is due to appear in court on Monday on the additional charges of escaping from lawful custody. He was serving time for rape, serious assault and stock theft among other charges.
The other offender, Lonwabo Ngqokoqwana, who was also serving time for rape, remains at large.
Gantana said anyone who may have information on his whereabouts should contact their nearest police station.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape is also underway.
