Mpumalanga police said one suspect was killed and two others wounded in a shootout with police early on Monday morning.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said Mpumalanga SAPS executed a “crucial operation” in response to reports of serious criminal activities, including extortion, attempted murder, and related offences.
He said police descended on a plot in Kwaggafontein where the suspects had converged.
Mdhluli said when they spotted the police, the suspects opened fire, with officers returning fire.
“In the ensuing shootout, one suspect was fatally wounded, while two others sustained injuries and were arrested.
“The two are currently under police guard in hospital receiving medical attention. None of the SAPS members sustained any injuries during the incident,” he said.
Mdhluli said although the fourth suspect managed to flee the scene, he said he may have sustained injuries during the confrontation.
He said a search for him is underway.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi thanked the “officers for their bravery and commitment to upholding the law.”
