A transport sector union has called for the dissolution of the board of the Rail Safety Regulator.
The call by the United National Transport Union followed an accident between two trains on Wednesday night in which one person was killed and several others injured.
The crash occurred after 9 pm when a Premier class train collided with a stationary Transnet Freight Rail train derailing several carriages between Horizon and Roodepoort in Johannesburg.
Untu’s Steve Harris said that the board of the Rail Safety Regulator, which was appointed on a month-on-month basis, has “no teeth”.
He said criminals have been targeting train infrastructure “in the worst ever vandalism spree” after the dismantled Board of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa canceled the contracts of 20 security companies without putting an alternative in its place.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula called for a “full investigation” into the cause of the crash.
