Off-duty Gauteng cop dies after shootout with robbers

File

Gauteng police are searching for the suspects who shot and killed an off-duty police officer who had responded to a robbery at a store in Springs on Sunday.

According to police, the officer, has “placed himself” on duty after being informed by members of a community about a robbery at a store in the town.

Gauteng provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni, said on Monday that the officer responded to the scene where a shootout ensued with about four suspects.

Mthombeni said the officer, whose name has not yet been released, was rushed to the nearest medical care centre, where he succumbed to his injuries.

“The tracking team is following up on leads and working tirelessly to trace and arrest the suspects,” said General Mthombeni.

"The brave and dedicated captain died while responding to the call of duty, even though he was off duty at the time. We will make sure that those who are responsible for his death are hunted down to face the full might of the law.

“I would like to extend my condolences to the family of our fallen hero,” said Lieutenant General Mthombeni.
