Numsa granted certificate to strike at Transnet

JOHANNESBURG, June (ANA) - The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa said on Friday it had been granted a certificate of non-resolution to strike at Transnet over what it said was the state-owned logistics company's refusal to recognise the labour group.

"Transnet is frustrating our members. They are refusing to grant us recognition because they are worried about the impact that Numsa will have," the union said, accusing Transnet of favouring a rival labour group.

"We are convinced that we meet the threshold for recognition but the management of Transnet keeps manipulating the process. That is why we are demanding that an independent audit must be done to establish the true representation of all trade unions organizing at Transnet."

Numsa demanded a meeting with the new Transnet board and the transport minister to discuss this and other issues, warning: "If not, we will embark on a protected strike in support of all our members in Transnet, not just in the rail division but throughout the organization".

Numsa says it has approximately 7,400 members at the state-owned enterprises.

"Our members have the right to be represented by the trade union of their choice," it said.
