NSRI mission to release seal pups quickly followed by patient evacuation from fishing boat

A trip to Bird Island in Algoa Bay to release seal pups was quickly followed by a rescue mission for the National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) duty crew in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

At 6 am on Sunday, NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew aboard the sea rescue craft Spirit of Toft assisted Bayworld to transport two seal pups to Bird Island to be released, NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said.

“The operation was successful and the seal pups have been released without incident. On returning to base, NSRI Port Elizabeth was activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to respond to rendezvous with the fishing vessel Santa Johanna to patient evacuate a 39-year-old crewman with abdominal pain,” he said.

The Spirit of Toft, accompanied by an Eastern Cape government health EMS rescue paramedic, rendezvoused with the fishing vessel and the patient was transferred to the sea rescue craft. He was brought to shore in the care of the EMS rescue paramedic and had been transported to a hospital in a stable condition, Lambinon said.
