NPA boss called to explain delays in Vrede Dairy Project probe

NPA boss, Shaun Abrahams, will be called before two Parliamentary Committees to explain delays in the arrests of suspects in the Estina Dairy corruption saga in the Free State.

The decision to call Abrahams and the Hawks Acting Head, Lieutenant-General Yolisa Matakata, to appear before Parliament's Portfolio Committees on Justice and Correctional Services and Police, followed a meeting of the chairpersons of both Committees, Dr. Mathole Motshekga, and Francois Beukman.

On Wednesday the Portfolio Committee on Police said heard that the Hawks that their probe into the Vrede Dairy Project was completed last year already, but arrests were only effected in February this year because of delays by the NPA.

Police Committee chairperson, Francois Beukman, said that "this is an important meeting to understand the obstacles affecting the Hawks' ability to execute its mandate."

"The efforts of the Hawks to fight organised crime should not be hampered by slow decision-making. Prosecution-driven cases dealing with state capture and court-ready dockets should be prioritised," he said.

Dr. Motshekga said it is important for parliamentary committees to collaborate to get a full picture of what occurred. "We cannot have the public doubt our institutions and, therefore, we need to get to the bottom of this. The NPA will have to explain why there was such a long delay."
