The speaker of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality in the Northern Cape, Nomakhaya Mjila, is still in a serious condition in hospital, after allegedly being set alight by her husband.
Police say Mjila's husband entered a relative's house where she was staying in Olifantshoek in the early hours of Saturday morning.
He allegedly doused her with petrol and set her alight.
She sustained serious injuries, while her baby daughter and relative died in the blaze.
The husband also sustained burns and was arrested shortly after the incident.
He is under police guard in hospital and will be charged with murder, attempted murder and arson.
