A 48-year-old North West father has been jailed for an effective six-year behind bars for the death of his two-year-old daughter.

The National Prosecuting Authority says Mokete Legodi, was sentenced on Monday in High Court sitting in Klerksdorp.

Spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, said he was initially charged with murder and kidnapping but the latter charge was dropped while the murder charge was changed to one of culpable homicide.

He said the child’s body was found in the ceiling of a house last May after taking her from her mother’s house while the woman was in hospital.

Mamothame said in his defence Legodi said that the child fell while he was carrying her and when he realised she was dead, he panicked and was afraid to report the incident.

The North West Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr Rachel Sekhaolelo said the sentence highlights the need for parents “to be the first line of protection for their children” and that crimes should be reported to the authorities, no matter how difficult they may seem.
