No quick-fix for Eskom's problems

Analysts say there is no quick fix for the country's rolling blackouts, Eskom's financial issues and its maintenance backlog, and South Africans will have to learn to "live with it".

Energy sector analyst, Chris Yelland says there are no short-term solutions.

He says unless Eskom does proper maintenance, South Africans will have to learn to accept load-shedding for at least the next three years.

Yelland says Eskom's problems include financial and operational sustainability.

On Friday, Eskom implemented stage one load-shedding and said it was due to high electricity demand and the unavailability of some generating units.

The Mail&Guardian reported that Eskom was 21 days from going broke, and Public Enterprises Minister, Lynne Brown confirmed the pressure on the company's liquidity position.

The power utility said it had already issued bonds in both local and international markets and had approached other institutions for funds.

On Friday evening, Eskom spokesperson, Andrew Etzinger said they stopped load shedding at around five o'clock in the afternoon, after seeing an improvement in their generator capacity situation.
