No increases proposed for metro mayors

The Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers has recommended that any public office bearer earning more than R1 000 000 a year, which includes mayors, should not receive an increase.

The commission has recommended that increases should be based on a sliding scale which means that those earning between R800 000 and R1 000 000 a year will get a 4%  pay hike while those who take home between R500 000 and R800 000 a year should get 5% more.

At the bottom of the pile are metro councillors, with SA Local Government Association recommending a 7% pay hike.
