The KwaZulu Natal provincial government will not be hosting any Freedom Day celebrations on Wednesday.
Premier Sihle Zikalala said the Province was still mourning the more than 400 lives lost in the recent floods, with many communities still reeling from the disaster.
“We are in a month where we should be celebrating our freedom as a nation, but as the KZN government, we saw it fit to halt any celebrations,” he said.
Zikalala said there was “nothing to celebrate if many KZN residents are faced with so much loss.
Speaking during a joint sitting of Parliament on Tuesday, Zikalala said the flood disaster had claimed 435 lives so far, with thousands left homeless.
"As KwaZulu-Natal, we also wish to express our solidarity with our sister province, the Eastern Cape, which also suffered devastating floods, stealing precious lives, destroying homes, damaging infrastructure, disrupting services, and bringing untold pain to communities."
President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the national celebration of Freedom Day at Kees Taljaard Stadium in Middelburg in Mpumalanga.
