Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Gary van Niekerk was on Saturday morning on his way to Wells Estate and Motherwell in an effort to quell tensions that flared up in the area.
Algoa FM News understands that the violent protest action is over electricity issues, with some residents claiming that they’ve not had power for past seven days.
They’ve warned that if mayor Van Niekerk does not address them by 16H00 on Saturday, they would escalate their protest.
There have been reports of violent protest action in the area, with five trucks allegedly set alight by angry demonstrators on Friday night.
Van Niekerk, joined by senior municipal officials, was on his way to volatile area on Saturday morning where the protest allegedly spilled over on the N2 and Addo Road areas.
