The Eastern Cape Transport Department said nine people were killed in two accidents in the province over the weekend.
Department spokesperson, Khuselwa Rantjie, said five people, including three children, were killed on Sunday when a passenger car with eight occupants crashed into a stationary truck.
She said the accident happened on the N6 approximately 30km from Queenstown on the road to Jamestown.
"It's alleged that speeding and overloading suspected to be the cause of the accident. 3 occupants were transported to Frontier Hospital. A case of culpable homicide will be open and investigated by the Sterkstroom SAPS," she said.
Meanwhile, Rantjie said that four people were killed when two vehicles collided head-on between Mthatha and Qumbu on Saturday.
Two other people were seriously injured.
"As the Department of Transport we plead with motorists to drive with caution and stay alert at all times when using the roads. We further call on communities to take care of their livestock as they cause fatal accident on our roads," she said.
