A 30-year-old suspect from Sunnyside in Pretoria is expected to appear in court this week after a drug bust at his complex led to the discovery of nine firearms, drugs, ammunition, teargas and bulletproof vests.
A police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters says members of the Johannesburg Central Crime Intelligence were following up on an alleged drug deal taking place at a residential complex on Monday, when they noticed two vehicles of interest, pulling up next to each other.
She says when they saw unknown packets being transferred through the windows, police responded.
They arrested one suspect, but his accomplice managed to escape and is still on the run.
Brigadier Peters says an onsite investigation led them to a flat where they discovered two AK-47 rifles, three shotguns, two Ruger rifles and a revolver.
She says they also seized security dashboard lights on the scene, a practice hand grenade, teargas and smoke canisters.
Peters says the parcels which were passed through the vehicle windows outside the complex had an unknown substance, believed to be drugs, that still needs to be tested.
An undisclosed amount of cash was also found.
Police believe that the suspect was involved in far more than just dealing in drugs and the investigation continues.
