A newborn baby boy was found on Friday morning under the Duzi Bridge, near a canoe club, in Pietermaritzburg.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said patrolling security members from B-Secure Security found the baby and alerted ER24 paramedics who were then called to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the paramedics found the security members warming the child,” Meiring said. “It was reported that the child had suffered mild hypothermia.”
The child was treated and warmed before being transported to Edendale Provincial Hospital for further care.
The incident was reported to local authorities for further investigation.
