The Department of Transport says amendments have been made to the Road Traffic Act that will require the speed of mini-buses, buses and goods vehicles to be electronically limited.
In a statement on Thursday, the Transport Ministry says the amendments will come into effect from the 1st of December 2016.
The amendments require that speed govenors be fitted restricting the speed of these vehicles to the speed limits set out in the National Road Traffic Act.
Department spokesperson, Tiyani Rikhotso, says speed governors will be used to restrict the speed of mini-buses, midi- buses, buses or goods vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass exceeding 3500 kilograms.
"We want to ensure that public transport vehicles that carry multiple lives at a time, are regulated at particular speeds. Speed continues to be identified by various researchers as a major contributing factor to road crashes and fatalities that we continue to experience in South Africa." says Rikhotso.
