National Press Club condemns protest at home of veteran journalist Peter Bruce

The National Press Club said that journalists should be allowed to report the news without fear of intimidation.

The Press Club on Thursday added its voice to the condemning the protest by members of Black First Land First outside the home of well-known journalist Peter Bruce in Parkhurst, Johannesburg.

Bruce is the Editor-at-large of the Tiso Blackstar Group, formerly Times Media.

The National Press Club said that “more than a dozen members of Black First Land First gathered outside Bruce’s home holding placards”.

“They vandalized his garage door with the words “land or death” and hurled insults at him, allegedly saying they want to occupy his home which they claimed has been built on stolen land,” said chairperson,Jos Charle.

The protest was reportedly linked to an opinion piece in Business Day on Thursday (entitled The price of writing about the Guptas) in which Bruce claimed he was targeted by the Gupta family for writing critical articles about them.

Charle said that “journalists should be allowed to report the news without any fear, intimidation or harassment”.

“It is unacceptable that journalists are intimated at their homes. We cannot sit back and watch our colleagues being abused,” he said.
