National Press Club attacks ANC

The National Press Club says the attacks by the ANC and government on the media are emotional, irrational and totally uncalled for.

Press club chairperson, Yusuf Abramjee, was reacting to calls from ANC secretary-general, Gwede Mantashe and SACP secretary-general, Blade Nzimande, for a boycott of the City Press newspaper.

The ANC is angered at the paper's refusal to remove an image of the now controversial painting of president Jacob Zuma by artist Brett Murrary on its website.

Abramjee says the attacks on the media are uncalled for, saying they are an emotional response.

"The matter is before a court of law and to call for a boycott of the City Press we believe is not correct, it will spur on more emotion and anger and we are calling on the ANC to retract the statement the ruling party has a responsibility not to continue raising the temperature over a very controversial issue" Abramjee said.
