The National Assembly (NA) passed four Bills on Tuesday that will now go to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) for concurrence.
The Cannabis for Private Purpose Bill
The Bill was introduced in Parliament in 2020 with the aim to address the so-called 'Prince Judgment' that broadly focused on the right of privacy of adults using cannabis for private use.
The Committee on Justice and Correctional Services requested permission from the NA to extend the subject of the Bill to include considerations for what is in the best interest of children as the initial Bill had a narrow adult-centred focus.
According to the Bill, there is a prescribed quantity of cannabis that an adult can cultivate and possess in private and smoking and consumption of cannabis in public is prohibited.
Children are also prohibited to possess, deal or consume dagga.
Once the NCOP concurs, the Bill will go the the President to sign into law.
