Music student arrested for allegedly stealing Cello

Police in Bloemfontein have arrested a music student from the University of the Free State (UOFS) who allegedly stole a fellow student’s 25-year-old Cello worth R60 000.

According to police, the Cello went missing during a University concert in September 2019.

A case of theft was opened soon after.

On Thursday police received information about a Cello, fitting the description, being sold on Facebook for just R6 000.

Police tracked down the 25-year-old student to his house in Parkweg and requested to see the instrument.

According to the Task Team, the Cello was painted in a different colour but the owner had given them very distinctive marks that were visible.

The suspect could not give a convincing reason as to why he was in possession of the instrument and was arrested.

Even people from outside the country expressed interest in the student’s post on Facebook where he offered the Cello for sale.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
