The South African Municipal Workers Union says all municipal workers across the country will receive a 5.4% pay adjustment from 1 July.
Samwu said on Friday that this is per the three-year salary and wage collective agreement concluded by all parties in the South African Local Government Bargaining Council.
Spokesperson, Papike Mohale said; "these increases are the last leg of the salary and collective agreement reached by parties in 2021," he said.
He said the sectoral minimum wage will increase to R9 531.21, while the homeowner's allowance will increase to R1 066.4. The cap for the employer's contribution towards medical aid will increase to R5 277.38.
"We are as a Union, aware of municipalities that are yet to implement other legs of this collective agreement, and as such we will be focusing much of our attention to ensure that all municipalities comply with the 2021 collective agreement," Mohale added.
Meanwhile, unions in the SA Local Government Bargaining Council will also begin negotiations later this year for a "new salary and wage collective agreement in anticipation of the lapse of the current agreement."
"We are all aware of the financial situation which municipal workers find themselves in and as such, we want to ensure that the upcoming negotiations take workers out of this situation," Mohale said.
