JOHANNESBURG, May 14 (ANA) – The Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) has called on citizens across all sectors of society to stand together and fight for their common good by taking action against destruction of public property, in particular during protest action.
The call was made during a special church service to pray for the country on Mothers’ Day at the Elim Full Gospel Church in the Tshwane suburb of Hatfield on Sunday, the Gauteng infrastructure development department said in a statement
This comes in the aftermath of a week-long series of violent public protests which gripped areas in some townships in Gauteng.
The MRM had partnered with the Gauteng provincial government to mobilise civil society and churches to promote the “iCare, We Care” campaign to promote the protection of public property from destruction, vandalism, and looting, the statement said.
The focus of the campaign was on the destruction, vandalism, and looting of public property meant to provide services for communities, such as schools, libraries, and transport services.
Speaking during the prayer session, the MRM’s Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa said: “Our country needs citizens to act swiftly to protect what has already been built for communities. As we lose these properties we are also loosing rich knowledge which may never be retrieved. We are denying our children and society the future we aspire for. We should promote dialogue as a solution to the problems facing the country.”
Mkhatshwa said the partnership between MRM and the Gauteng government was to use the church to bring change in communities and to promote active citizenship. “The country needs prayer and action from ordinary citizens,” Mkhatshwa said.
