Mpumalanga cop arrested for double murder

File

A 31-year-old Mpumalanga policeman handed himself over to his colleagues following a double murder in Embalenhle on Saturday.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Jabu Ndubane said the men were found by an elderly woman lying a few metres apart, with one able to respond to her inquiries.

He said she alerted the community and the police were called to the scene where the men were declared dead after allegedly being assaulted.

According to him, the two were hired to do work at the policeman's cousin's house where a television disappeared, prompting the cousin to seek assistance from the said Constable to recover the stolen item.

"Allegations further indicate that the Constable and an accomplice located the two victims then reportedly assaulted them and left them at the scene where they were later discovered.

The policeman was off duty at the time of the incident and is expected to appear in court soon.

The second suspect is still at large.

Ndubane said the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further investigation, while SAPS will conduct a parallel investigation.

Mpumalanga police management condemned the incident.
