MPs united in condemning EFF behaviour

Members of Parliament were unanimous in their condemnation of the antics of the EFF on Thursday night, which led to the opening of Parliament being temporarily suspended.

They called for “consequences” for the planned disruptions, with UDM deputy president Nqabayomzi Kwankwa summing up the general feeling, saying they were “gatvol”.

Freedom Front Plus (FFPlus) MP Peter Mulder said it was time to “hit them in the pockets”.

EFF members disrupted proceedings which began 90 minutes later when they demanded that former President F W de Klerk be ejected from the gallery and that Pravin Gordhan be fired.

National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise also came under fire for not ejecting the EFF members, who eventually left of their own accord.

"We also agree we must relook at the joint rules because they make it difficult to take members out of the house,” Modise said in response to the MP's comments.

She also agreed that a financial penalty should be instituted for disruptions.
