MP's want more resources to be deployed to curb cash-in-transit heists and taxi violence

PARLIAMENT, May (ANA) - More specialised police units need to be deployed to the cash-in-transit and minibus taxi industries which has experienced a surge in violence over the last few weeks, chairman of Parliament's portfolio committee on police, Francois Beukman, said on Monday.

He was responding to an increase in brazen cash-in-transit heists by armed syndicates. This weekend, ten people, most of the taxi drivers were killed in an apparent fight over taxi routes by rival taxi organisations.

"The murders over the weekend in Cape Town are worrying in the context of the high number of commuters that use taxis daily. The lives of the majority of our people are put at risk as a result of these apparent disagreements within the associations," Beukman said.

"More crime intelligence assets should be allocated to those industries being held ransom by a small band of well-armed and resourced criminal syndicates. The National Development Plan is very clear that technology should be used optimally by the police service to deal with crime effectively."
