Motive unclear for assassination of Limpopo professor

University of Limpopo

The University of Limpopo has expressed its shock after Accounting and Auditing Lecturer, Professor Mohamed Saber Tayob was gunned down.

Fifty-one-year-old Tayob was shot and killed while jogging in Munik Road next to the Sterpark suburb in Polokwane at about 06:30 am on Sunday.

Tayob was the Director of the School of Accountancy and joined the University in October 2009 as a Senior Lecturer of Accounting and Auditing before earning a promotion to Associate Professor in 2017.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mahlo Mokgalong says he was a seasoned Chartered Accountant and academic, who served the institution with distinction.

Police in Polokwane have since launched a manhunt for the suspects.

Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, says Tayob was jogging when a white Volkswagen Polo drove past him and made a u-turn before stopping next to him.

Mojapelo says an occupant of the vehicle got out and shot him several times at point-blank range, before quickly driving off from the scene.

He says the motive for the murder is unknown at this point.

A video of Tayob's murder has gone viral on social media.
