A mother from Pampierstad in the Northern Cape was sentenced to five years direct imprisonment this week for failing to report the rape of her teenage daughter.
Spokesperson Colonel Mashay Gamieldien says the 36-year-old mother failed to report the rape and assault of her 15-year-old daughter, allegedly at the hands of her stepfather.
She says the incident happened in 2015 but was only reported two years later on the 27th of December 2018.
Both the mother and stepfather were arrested and both were denied bail.
The case against the stepfather must still go to trial.
Police issued a stern warning to parents who fail to report crimes involving children.
