The Health Department reported 14 828 new Covid-19 cases in the 24-hour period up until Saturday evening.

The latest figure represents a slightly lower positivity rate of 25.7%.

Thirty Covid-19 related deaths were reported on Saturday, bringing total fatalities to 90 773.

The Western Cape reported more than 3 700 new infections, followed by Kwa Zulu Natal with more than 3 600.

The Eastern Cape confirmed 1 720 new cases during the same period.

Meanwhile, in his Christmas message, Deputy President David Mabuza, said despite cumulative cases of new infections and the recorded fatalities since the last festive season,  South Africa had made "progress in sailing through the difficult period of the coronavirus pandemic."

"Through collaborative work and international solidarity, scientists continue to excellently and timeously make discoveries that benefit the world in taking science-based decisions that place us in a better position to defeat Covid-19," he said.
