Nine people arrested in connection with the murder of people related to the late struggle icon Ahmed Kathrada appeared in the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh said the suspects between the ages of 16 and 60 were arrested a few days after the murders.
She said the 28-year-old Ahmed Kathrada arrived home at 9 pm on the first of November when he was attacked and overpowered by two people while opening his gate and burglary door.
Myburg said his mother heard the commotion after her son was shot in the chest and called her husband to assist.
The 65-year-old Yunus Kathrada opened the door and was shot in the head.
Ahmed died on arrival at a hospital.
The suspects fled the scene without stealing anything.
A Special task team who investigated the murders also confiscated a firearm and ammunition and two vehicles allegedly used in the crime.
The 16-year-old suspect was taken to a juvenile facility.
The case was postponed until the 14th of November.
