Mopping up operations are underway in the canals at St Francis Bay where more than a hundred homes were razed to the ground in a devastating fire which tore through the area last night.
Miraculously, there were no fatalities in the blaze which started in the Royal Warf area at about 5-30 yesterday afternoon - destroying more than 100 homes in a matter of hours.
Fanned by a strong south westerley wind, the fire jumped canals and burnt through homes five to ten at a time.
Kouga Municipality spokesperson Laura-Leigh Randall says Disaster Management officials are at the scene to determine exactly how many homes were razed by the fire and if anything can be saved from the ruins.
Randall says officials will be monitoring the area closely to ensure that there are no flare-ups.
She commended the local community for standing together in a time of great crisis.
A Joint Operations Centre has been set up at the local police station and anyone who feels they may be able to assist can phone the JOC on 042 200 18 00.
