The appointment of South Africa's first black woman top cop has drawn mixed reaction, with opposition parties questioning her lack of police experience.
However, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa believes Mangwashi Victoria Phiyega is the right person for the job.
President Jacob Zuma announced Phiyega's appointment on Tuesday afternoon, after axing General Bheki Cele as national police commissioner.
Phiyega is currently the chair of the presidential review committee on state-owned enterprises, and deputy chair of the independent commission on the remuneration of office bearers.
Meanwhile Cosatu said the dismissal of Bheki Cele as national police commissioner must set a precedent for zero tolerance of misuse of public funds.
The Council for the Advancement of the SA Constitution said Cele's dismissal was a vindication of Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's report last year, in which she found his conduct in respect of the lease agreements for police offices "improper and unlawful".
