"Miners unite in hunger" Gift of givers

The humanitarian organisation, Gift of the Givers, says there are around 15 thousand white miners affected by the prolonged strike in the platinum industry.

Now, the organisation is bussing in representatives of white mining families to Rustenburg Mines to receive food parcels that are being given to other families.

Gift of the Givers founder, Dr Imtiaaz Sooliman, says while there may be some level of fear, anxiety and apprehension among the white mining families, they will be paving the way for other families to come forward to receive assistance.

He says about 100 people are making their way to Rustenburg on Monday.

"There has been violence and intimidation in the mines so people are afraid that some might think they are coming to work at the mines. The black miners said there will be no intimidation and referred to the white miners as their brothers and fellow workers. But the white families had to be convinced" he said
