File

Mpumalanga police have opened an inquest docket following the deaths of four miners in a conveyer-belt accident at a mine in Balfour.

Spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said it is suspected that the “mine conveyer belt fell” resulting in the four deaths.

Two other miners were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

Mohlala said the incident occurred on Thursday, before noon.  He did not name the mine.

“The circumstances surrounding this incident are yet to be established, including the identities of the victims who unfortunately died. An inquest with regard to the death of the victims will be investigated,” he said.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has sent condolences to the families of the deceased.
