A worker has been shot dead at a Lonmin mine.
The National Union of Mineworkers said one of its members was shot dead on Monday at the union's office at Lonmin's Western Platinum mine.
North West police spokesperson, colonel Sabata Mokgwabo, says they're investigating a case of murder and one of attempted murder.
"We can confirm that there was a shooting incident on Monday. Two men were allegedly shot at, one of them died on the scene while the other one died at hospital. The indication that we have at the moment is that they are members of NUM"
Meanwhile, Swiss-based Glencore Xstrata says it has dismissed a thousand workers who staged wildcat strike at its chrome operations last week.
Mine spokesperson, Christopher Tsatsa-wane, says the workers have until Tuesday to appeal their dismissal.
Workers, who are members of the new union Amcu, downed tools last Tuesday at Xstrata's three operations in Limpopo amid claims of assault against a shift supervisor.
Last week President Jacob Zuma called on strikers and firms to find swift solutions to disagreements amid renewed wildcat stoppages.
