Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant says more than 17-million 200-thousand working hours were lost to illegal or unprotected strikes last year.
She says last year, 99 strikes were recorded in the department's strike data system.
Oliphant says out of 99 strikes, 45 were classified as unprotected or unprocedural.
The minister said according to the International Labour Organisation's guidelines, the working hours lost were derived by multiplying the number of employees involved in each stoppage, by the number of hours it lasted.
This was done with each industry, and added together to get a national total.
