Methane gas from geological layers reason for CBD explosion

Johannesburg Mayor, Thapelo Gwamanda, inspecting the blast site

City of Joburg

Johannesburg City Manager Floyd Brink has ruled out terrorism, illegal mining activities, and an Egoli Gas pipe leak as the cause of last month's huge explosion in the city's CBD.

One person was killed and more than 40 others were injured in the blast.

Brink said the explosion on Lilian Ngoyi Street was caused by methane gas, adding that there was no negligence by any department.

He said methane gas from geological layers escaped to the surface due to seismic action.

Johannesburg Mayor, Thapelo Gwamanda, lauded the city’s emergency services for their response to the explosion.

"Our rapid response and emergency services were exceptional in their actions from the day of the explosion. They displayed great technical ability and preparedness for emergencies and disasters," Gwamanda said.
