Three men, allegedly from Lesotho, who disguised themselves in blankets, shot and killed four mourners and injured six others when they barged into a tent at a night vigil and randomly started to shoot at people.
Police Spokesperson Brigadier Sam Makhele says mourners were busy singing in Meqheleng, near Ficksburg when the incident happened.
A 60-year-old man was killed, as well as a female who was hit by a stray bullet whilst sleeping.
Makhele said in another incident about an hour later to men aged 33 and 38 were also fatally wounded and certified dead on the scene.
Six people were injured, two of them sustained gunshot wounds in the lower back.
Neighbours called the police but when they arrive the suspects already disappeared in the direction of the Lesotho border.
A Task team has been established consisting of Detectives, Crime Intelligence, Public Order Police and a Tactical Response team.
The motive is still unknown at this stage.
