Parliamentary speaker Baleka Mbete said Sunday that she would begin the consultation process on a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma.
Mbete said she cut short her trip to Bangladesh and returned home “given the seriousness” of the motion.
The DA requested Mbete to convene the National Assembly to enable debate on the motion of no confidence following a week of dramatic political developments in which Pravin Gordhan and his deputy, Mcebisi Jonas, were sacked.
Gordhan was replaced by former Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba, in a move that has been widely condemned by political parties, civil society and even some senior ANC officials and stalwarts.
Addressing a media briefing at OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday Afternoon, Mbete said the rule of Parliament demand assessment of the request, consultation with the Chief Whip of the majority party and then scheduling.
Mbete said formal consultations will begin on Tuesday.
