Mbalula to challenge Public Protector's findings in court

Former Sports Minister, Fikile Mbalula, says he is considering whether to legally challenge Public Protector, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane's report on his now controversial family trip to Dubai.

On Wednesday, Mkhwebane released a report which she said confirmed that sporting goods supplier, Sedgars had bankrolled part of Mbalula’s 2016 family holiday.

She said this was in contravention of the Executive Members Ethics Act, a charge Mbalula has denied.

He said in a statement that he had informed the Public Protector during her investigation that he had repaid the loan to Sedgars director, Yusuf Dockrat, which was made in a personal capacity.

He said he is now consulting his lawyers about challenging the Public Protector's adverse findings, which he described as regrettable.

Mbalula said that the conclusions of the Public Protector were, "with respect, unsubstantiated and prejudicial".

"They are strongly denied," he said.
