Former police minister Fikile Mbalula has resigned as Member of Parliament for the African National Congress (ANC), the Office of the ANC Chief Whip confirmed on Friday.
The Office of the ANC Chief Whip said that Mbalula tendered his resignation as an ANC MP, effective from 26 February 2018.
"While comrade Mbalula’s departure from Parliament will leave a void, we derive satisfaction from the knowledge that he will continue serving the movement as the ANC's head of elections towards the 2019 general elections campaign," it said.
Mbalula lost out on his Cabinet position last week Tuesday with nine other ministers when President Cyril Ramaphosa reshuffled his executive. Former Commissioner of Police Bheki Cele was named as Mbalula's replacement.
Mbalula was subsequently named by the ANC as the head of elections to be based full-time at its headquarters Luthuli House in Johannesburg.
