Manhunt underway for Welkom shooters

Police in Welkom in the Free State have launched a manhunt for three suspects who shot four mine workers on Wednesday, killing two people and wounding two others.

The incident took place at a bus stop in Bracken Street while the workers were waiting to be transported to the Beatrix mine just before 5 pm.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said the gunmen in an unidentified double-cab bakkie stopped beside the unsuspecting victims and opened fire.

He said the deceased were a man and a woman whose identities were still being withheld.

Makhele said a fifth person was severely assaulted before the attackers fled.

Cases of murder and attempted murder are being investigated at Welkom for further investigation.
