Mandela family burial dispute continues in court

Nelson Mandela's grandson, chief Mandla Mandela, is expected to file papers in court on Monday opposing an interim court order granted against him in the Mthatha High Court.

Friday's order by judge Lusindiso Pakade, has not been made public.

However, it was widely reported that sixteen members of the Mandela family had turned to the courts to have the remains of three of the former president's children reburied at Qunu after Mandla had them exhumed and moved to his homestead at Mvezo.

He had been given 48 hours to respond to the order.

In a statement on Sunday, Mandla Mandela, said he was sad and disappointed that some family have chosen the courts to resolve intricate family matters.

He also said that he heard about the court application from media reports.

Meanwhile, the ANC has hit back at Madiba's former wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, over her criticism of an April visit by president Jacob Zuma and top ANC officials to his Houghton home.

Madikizela-Mandela recently told an international television broadcaster that the family had been hurt by the visit and subsequent remarks by Zuma who said that Mandela had been in good spirits despite footage showing him looking frail.

ANC spokesperson, Jackson Mthembu, said Sunday night that Madikizela-Mandela's comments were regrettable.

He said the ANC is in daily contact with the Mandela family and the issues she had raised had not been brought up on any of these occasions.
