Former Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Mduduzi Manana, has been sentenced to a fine of R100 000 or 12 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to assaulting two women in a Johannesburg nightclub.
He was sentenced today by Magistrate Ramsammy Reddy, who also ordered that Manana complete an anger management programme, 500 hours community service to be rendered at a specified NGO.
Reddy said that the anger management program and community service will be closely monitored and supervised by a probation officer, to whom he must report on Tuesday.
Manana was also ordered by Magistrate Reddy to pay compensation to his victims in predetermined amounts.
Being called a “stabane” (gay) did not give former deputy education minister Mduduzi Manana the right to assault three women in a Johannesburg nightclub, Reddy said as he handed down judgement on Monday.
“It was degrading for them as women to experience such a degrading act.”
Reddy added that being called a “stabane” did not call for Manana to assault Mandisa Duma, Noluthando Mahlaba and Thina Mopipa
Manana had been convicted of three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm after pleading guilty to the charges. The charges relate to the assault of three women at Cubana in Fourways on August 6.
